Terrain Multi-Directional Hillshade

This map provides a hillshaded surface generated dynamically using a multi-directional hillshade server-side custom function on the World Elevation Terrain layer. This algorithm computes hillshade from six different directions, where each hillshade is multiplied by a weight and thereafter the sum of all is normalized to produce the final output. The z factor is varied based on scale so that a suitable hillshade is visible at all scales. This layer is useful for visualization of the Terrain because it is easy to interpret and use as a base layer in applications and maps. Multi-Directional Hillshade provides a quick indication of the shape of the terrain at a range of map scales. The image service can be added to web applications or other maps to enhance contextual understanding. Use for Analysis: No. A hillshade is generally not used for analysis. Note: If you intend to use it as basemap, consider using the tiled version of this service i.e. World Hillshade, which provides fast and performant rendering.
