Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of brominated flame retardants that can be detected broadly in both the environment and living organisms, and the 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) is the predominant congener of them that has the stronger toxicity and bioaccumulation. However, the impacts of BDE-47 have so far been barely studied in the sea cucumber. Here, the effect of BDE-47 (0.1 µg/L ~ 10.0 µg/L) on respiratory rate and oxygen consumption rate (OCR) was measured in Apostichopus japonicus. The average OCR of A. japonicus ranged from 0.025 to 0.031 mg O2 h-1 g-0.8 in the CT group; from 0.026 to 0.040 mg O2 h-1 g-0.8 in the LC group; from 0.031 to 0.040 mg O2 h-1 g-0.8 in the MC group; and from 0.027 to 0.036 mg O2 h-1 g-0.8 in the HC group. Compared with the mean OCRs of each group before exposure, we detected no significant differences in mean OCR in all the groups on days 1, 10, and 20 of exposure (P >0.05). In addition, the mean respiratory rates of sea cucumbers ranged from 6.33 to 8.00 in all the groups. Similar to the results of the significant analysis of OCR, the average respiratory rates of sea cucumbers on days 1, 10, and 20 of exposure in the CT, LC, and HC groups did not differ significantly from the respiratory rates before exposure
