Squinzano, Plebiscito square, june 12, 1922: in the presence of the "tenore mondiale" Tito Schipa, il Concerto cittadino (named after him) performs three "deliziose composizioni" by Schipa himself: a) Graziosetta gavotta; b) El coqueton tango; c) Jota danza spagnola. They were "instrumentate per banda" by the director, Ernesto Abbate, "valoroso" exponent of the Vessellian school. A century after that event, the rediscovery of this suite becomes a stimulating opportunity for study. By comparing the score for wind instruments with Schipa's residual pages for piano, it is possible to evaluate in what way cultured and popular traditions, ancient and modern, national and transcultural, intersected between them in Salento, in the early decades of the 20th century.
