A transitional water body is a distinct and significant part of surface waters near the mouths of rivers, which are partly saline due to their proximity to coastal waters but which remain fundamentally influenced by fresh water currents, constituting the basic delineation of aquatic environments intended to be the unit of assessment of the WFD. WFD reporting correspondence: This entity corresponds to WISE's Transitional Water Body (TWBODY) concept.
