Activation of the pentose phosphate pathway in macrophages is crucial for granuloma formation in sarcoidosis

Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous disease of unknown cause. We performed single-cell RNA sequencing to identify the macrophages that comprise sarcoidosis granulomas. Skin samples were obtained from healthy subjects and patients with sarcoidosis by skin biopsy. Skin samples were digested with collagenase and single-cell suspensions were prepared.
