Pseudomonas putida 1290, which was originally isolated from the pear phyllosphere, was the first bacterial strain for which the iac gene cluster was characterized. The iac gene cluster enables P. putida 1290 to utilize the plant hormone indole-3-acetic acid (IAA/auxin) as a sole carbon source. P. putida 1290 also exhibits chemotaxis towards indole-3-acetic acid.
