We demonstrate a laser-diode-pumped eight-pass Nd:glass laser amplifier with high-gain, 1Hz repetition rate. The amplifier has the characteristics of high extraction efficiency, arbitrary shaping of temporal waveform and spatial beam intensity, and flexible spectral control to suppress the FM-to-AM conversion in the laser amplifier. Excellent beam quality is achieved with thermal lensing and thermal depolarization compensation. When a laser pulse with energy of 1.82 mJ and pulse width of 5 ns was injected into the amplifier, the system output energy reaches up to 3.3J with repetition rate of 1 Hz at the central wavelength of 1053.3 nm. The near-field modulation of the amplified output beam is lower than 1.2, indicating minimal distortion in near field. And, the far-field focusing ability of the beam is 90% at 2.9 times diffraction limit (TDL). Additionally, the temporal modulation depth of the whole system remains below 10%, satisfying requirements for the preamplifier system in the large scale laser facility.
