Heritage Cornwall DesignatedSites

The City of Cornwall has a rich and diverse history spanning well over 230 years, which includes many colonial, industrial, economic, and cultural influences. Cornwall's heritage is a source of strength and confidence that puts the changes of society into perspective and pushes us to grow and strive for a greater community. The City's historic legacy is embodied in the form of its works, institutions, monuments, and buildings; which are worthy of protection so that they may be shared with future generations. The Ontario Heritage Act and its initiatives help to foster a sense of pride while promoting culture as both a valuable source of knowledge, as well as a central element of a healthy community. Section 27 of the Ontario Heritage Act requires every municipality to maintain a current, publicly accessible register of properties of cultural heritage value or interest by way of a resolution of council. The Municipal Register is an official list or record of cultural heritage properties that have been identified as being important to the community. This initiative is in line with the Ontario Provincial Policy Statement's vision for protecting valuable resources, including heritage resources, as well as the City of Cornwall's Official Plan which has outlined provisions for protecting heritage resources.
