Bacterial Genomes Isolated from Skin of Yukaton Pigs

Despite their utility in wound healing studies, the pig skin microbiota is relatively underexplored. Pig skin is frequently colonized by Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus , a pathogen bacteria that contributes to significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Some bacterial species isolated from the skin microbiome have been shown to inhibit the growth of S. aureus. We cultured bacterial isolates from dorsal pig skin and identified several isolates that inhibited growth of USA300 strain Methicillin-resistant S. aureus on an agar diffusion assay. We performed whole genome sequencing on these cultured isolates and found antimicrobial biosynthetic gene clusters that could explain this antibiotic activity.
