We analyzed 88,000 fossilized land snail individuals from Chinese loess sequences to reconstruct the rate of snail compositional changes over the past 20,000 years. Community rate-of-change analysis detected two distinct phases of rapid compositional change in the snail communities. The first phase, spanning ~16.5–11 thousand years ago, corresponds to rapid climate change during the last deglaciation, while the second phase (from ~2.2 thousand years ago to the present) corresponds to more gradual climate change in the late Holocene.
