Workshop on Artificial Intelligence in Natural Hazards Engineering

The recent explosion of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Deep Learning (DL) technologies has shown the potential for dramatic impact in many domains. Nonetheless, many disciplines are currently struggling to identify the appropriate ways AI can and should impact work done in their disciplines.

To address these issues within the domain of natural hazards engineering (NHE), the DesignSafe cyberinfrastructure of the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI), in collaboration of the NHERI SimCenter, organized this Workshop on Artificial Intelligence in Natural Hazards Engineering. The purpose of the workshop was to explore a research agenda that determines where AI (including ML and DL) can and is being productively employed in natural hazards engineering research, what techniques hold key promise, and how these techniques may be adapted to the hazards engineering domain moving forward. This project includes the workshop report, as well as summaries of break out discussions and workshop presentations.
