Effect of florfenicol on the metabolism and diversity of the marine microbial community

Salmon farming can generate environmental impact caused by antibiotics used to control fish diseases, this implies the risk of affecting the microorganisms in the surrounding environment. The microplanktonic community is a key component of the ocean, as it is involved in biogeochemical cycles. Consequently, the use of antibiotics could alter the ability of the microbial community to process organic matter and nutrients. We evaluate the effect of FFC additions on marine microbial communities, through microcosm experiments in two coastal areas. The results suggest that FFC in concentrations lower than therapeutic ones would reduce the organic matter degradation capacity and the diversity of the natural community studied in both sites.
