The Land Stewardship Team at Trent University's Symons Campus conducted the initial mapping of vegetation units through aerial photo interpretation, followed by ground-truthing in the field to verify the type and extent of each community. Species identification and abundance estimates, ranging from dominant to rare (based on definitions from Lee et al., 1998), were performed across all four vegetation layers: canopy, subcanopy, shrub, and ground. This detailed botanical inventory enabled the assessment of botanical quality within the site. Smaller communities, typically less than 0.5 hectares, were delineated as distinct vegetation types where feasible, leveraging the improved resolution of aerial imagery and the smaller project scale. The practical applications of this detailed vegetation mapping include analyzing percent cover and habitat diversity, as well as identifying priority areas for preservation and restoration. Data collection was conducted in the field across various nature areas from 2021 to 2024, with additional gaps filled in 2025. North-south Environmental updated this layer in December 2025 using data from the Land Stewardship team. This data is used daily by the Land Stewardship team during fieldwork and is updated every five years or as new habitats are restored or created. The ongoing use and periodic updates of this data ensure that the ecological integrity of the nature areas is maintained and enhanced, supporting informed decision-making for conservation and land management efforts.
