DesignSafe Academy and NHERI Hackathon Data Report 2022

This report summarizes the 2022 evaluation of the DesignSafe Academy (DSA) and the NHERI Hackathon conducted by TACC’s STEM Evaluation Services team. The team assessed the implementation, outcomes, and impacts of both events using two instruments: the DesignSafe Academy survey and the NHERI Hackathon survey. These surveys collected data on participants’ backgrounds, satisfaction with the events, learning outcomes, and qualitative feedback and recommendations.

Survey findings indicate that most participants were highly satisfied with both the academy and the hackathon. Respondents found the DSA valuable for its hands-on activities, learning materials, and networking opportunities. They also reported that the academy effectively prepared them for the hackathon by familiarizing them with DesignSafe tools, introducing AI/ML concepts, and enhancing their coding skills. Hackathon participants further noted gains in their knowledge of DesignSafe tools, improved understanding of AI/ML, and opportunities for collaboration. Suggestions for improvement included refining the hands-on activities and group work structure. Participants also recommended that event organizers provide materials in advance and reconsider the length of both the academy and the hackathon. Additionally, respondents expressed interest in future learning opportunities related to DesignSafe tools, AI/ML, and coding.
