VPRS 981 Register of Contracts Accepted and Gazetted

The Public Works Department (VA 669) had wide-ranging responsibilities for all public works and buildings, including construction, maintenance and fitting out of these buildings. Other major responsibilities included roads and bridges, ports and harbours, local government and water supply.This series contains the records of the contracts which were accepted by the Department and published as being let to a particular contractor in the Government Gazette. Details are given of the date on which publication occurred, the number of and parties to the contract, the amount and the source and date of funding and details of the payment of instalments to the contractor for the completion of work. The information recorded in this register supplements that recorded in VPRS 979 Contract Books.In Unit 8, as well as details pertaining to general Public Works Department contracts are the details for those let by the Roads and Bridges Branch of the Department for the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges throughout the state. This Branch assumed this function in 1877 from the Department of Railways and Roads (VA 2875). Many of the contractors for this Branch were municipalities with the record being annotated with the date of an Order-in-Council for works on roads as provided for under the Local Government Act 1863.VPRS 981/P1 was previously registered as VPRS 979/P1 unit 44. It was reserialised in 2001 as part of the ARAD Project.
