The Department of Railways was organised into various branches, each with its own separate registry and record-keeping systems dealing with its own activities and administration. The Branches registered correspondence received from the public, other government departments, other railway branches including the Secretary's Branch. Secretary's Branch correspondence referred to other branches for action was registered in both the Secretary's Branch system (VPRS 422) and the relevant Branch system.Entries were made under the headings:Entry Number,Other Number (Secretary's Branch Correspondence Registration Number or Other Branch Registration Number),Date of Letter,From Whom,Subject,To Whom Sent,Remarks,Date sent and Received, Reply.This series provides a summary of the activities of this branch of the organisation. Letter registers were a means whereby correspondence received was summarised and its movement through the organisation was tracked and action taken with respect to it noted until it was finally attached to a file.
