Generative AI in Higher Education: Hope or Hurdle for Universities in Indonesia?

This study addresses that gap by exploring how important psychological and contextual factors such as workload, time pressure, reward sensitivity, and quality sensitivity influence the uptake of ChatGPT in Indonesian higher education. The research links these factors to procrastination, memory loss, and academic performance. Analysis of the data Using structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze quantitative data from 237 respondents, we uncovered distinct patterns. The results of the study show differences between the two groups, namely students and lecturers. The primary reasons why students use ChatGPT are high workloads and a strong focus on quality, while time constraints and reward sensitivity have less impact. For lecturers, the pattern reverses, time pressure and reward sensitivity are more influential, whereas workload and quality sensitivity are not significant. Both students and lecturers who use ChatGPT show pronounced associations with procrastination and memory loss. When it comes to academic achievement, the impact diverges; lecturers experience a noticeable decline in performance, while for students, the effect is not significant. These findings highlight that generative AI goes hand in hand with two sides. While it can increase efficiency, it also poses a risk to cognitive engagement. This study calls on universities to establish clear policies and develop educational programs that promote ethical AI use, aiming to balance technological ease with deep, critical learning. All of this supports Sustainable Development Goal for Quality, by emphasizing careful AI integration as a means to assure fair and excellent learning, with developing countries' educational environments currently facing rapid changes.
