This is the dataset used in the study entitled "An Analysis of Potential Low Frequency Vocalizations of Southern African Bryde's Whales" by Faustmann and Versfeld. The Bryde's whale is considered a data deficient species and few papers exist to date that focus on Bryde's whale vocalisations. Large quantities of data are required to better understand and to conserve this species. Methods such as tagging individuals with recording devices are not well suited to this application, passive acoustic monitoring is far more practical. This data comprises recordings taken by a single element hydrophone in False Bay at a depth of 20 to 30 meters. Each recording was taken at approximately the same location: S 34.16813°, E 18.75718°. Each folder in this directory is named according to the start date of the recording contained. The recordings are approximately 72 hours in duration. Detection tables are provided for the recordings of April 2023, which have been generated by and may be imported into Raven Pro. The detection tables indicate the positions in the data of possible Bryde's whale vocalisations. The recordings contain sounds from many other marine animals such as Humpback whales. Please feel free to make use of this dataset but cite it appropriately along with the corresponding study, should the data be used for a publication.
