This repository contains the EULAG-LCM simulation results and the plotting script for reproducing the figures of the publication Lottermoser & Unterstrasser, JGR, 2025. ## Contents- PlottingScript.py: The script to generate plots- SimulationData/: Data used by the script- requirements.txt: List of required Python packages The 'SimulationData' folder is structured as follows. Each simulation is characterized by a set of parameters: aircraft type, initial ambient temperature at cruise altitude, initial relative humidity with respect to ice, initial water vapor emission, updraught speed and vertical wind shear, N00 scaling simulation, initial position of the contrail in the simulation domain. We give explanations of these parameters:-aircraft type: A320/B737 ("A320") or A350/B777-like aircraft ("A350")-temperature: 217K ("217"), 225K ("225"), 230K ("230"), 233K ("233"), and 235K ("235")-ice relative humidity: 110% ("110") and 120% ("120")-water vapor emission: typical of kerosene ("I0Kero") and typical of hydrogen ("I0H2")-updraught speed and vertical wind shear: 1cm/s and vertical wind shear 0.002/s ("w01_s2"), 2cm/s and 0.002/s ("w02_s2"), 5cm/s and 0.002/s ("w05_s2"), and 1cm/s and 0.006/s ("w01_s6")-N00 scaling simulation: N00~10^(12) / m ("EIref"), N00~10^(10) / m ("EIlow100"), N00~10^(11) / m ("EIlow10"), N00~10^(13) / m ("EIhigh10"), N00~10^(14) / m ("EIhigh100")-positions: four different realizations of the same simulation; pos1, pos3, pos5, and pos7 The folders pos1-pos7 contain the files- "moist01.dat": temporal evolutions of total ice crystal number in 1/m and total ice mass in kg/m- "extinktion.da": temporal evolution of the three-dimensional extinction coefficient The 'SimulationData' folder also includes the folders 'contrail_props' and 'extinction_values'. 'contrail_props' contains the maximum values of contrail height and width encountered during the simulation.The subscript _xh refers to the considered time limit, i.e. 'contrail_heights_1h' contains the maximum contrail heights up to 1h evolution.'extinction_values' contains the spatially integrated values of the extinction coefficient, i.e. temporal evolutions of total extinction and optical thickness. ## How to runPlease follow the steps to reproduce the figures: - Download and unzip the reproduce_figures file.- Navigate to the destination folder and create a virtual environment by typing (e.g., in a Miniforge prompt) python -m venv venv - On Windows, then executevenv\Scripts\activate - On Linux or macOS, execute insteadvenv/bin/activate - Install the required packages by typing pip install -r requirements.txt - Run the plotting script to reproduce the figures by typing python PlottingScript.py The figures are saved in the (created) subdirectory './Plots'.
