The existance of male and females individuals, often strikingly different in morphology, reproductive strategies and behaviour, is one of the most widespread phenomena in biology. However, the genetic mechanisms used to generate this ubiquitous pattern are surprisingly diverse and do not at all follow a phylogenetic pattern. The tongue sole fish was selected to explain sex determination and sex chromosome evolution by whole genome sequence, because it offers the advantage of a relatively small genome and good karyological data with special ZW system and genomic resources as well as a molecular marker genetic map existed.
