Tree species preferences of deadwood-inhabiting fungi in temperate forests

Wood inhabiting fungi (WIF) play essential roles in regulation of carbon stocks and nutrient cycling of forest ecosystems. However, knowledge about WIF is only fragmentary and controversial. Here, we established a large-scale deadwood experiment with 11 tree species to investigate diversity and tree species preferences of WIF by next generation sequencing. Our results contradict existing knowledge based on sporocarp surveys, and challenge actual views on WIF distribution and diversity in temperate forests.
