Climate Analysis Datasets for the Western Indian Ocean Marine Protected Area Climate Futures (CliMPA) Project

This dataset contains processed input datasets supporting the climate analysis for the climate factsheets, developed under the Western Indian Ocean MPA Climate Futures (CliMPA) project. The factsheet describes observed and projected changes in sea surface temperature, ocean acidification, sea level rise, storms and rainfall which are key climate variables relevant to MPA planning and management in the Western Indian Ocean. All datasets are processed derivatives of publicly available source products covering the Western Indian Ocean ecoregions extent (32.42°E to 66.58°E, 29.70°S to 0.97°S) and reformatted to suit the analysis needs. The analysis scripts, output datasets and visualizations derived are maintained separately in the project GitHub repository at https://github.com/majambo/CliMPA. The deposit includes the following processed input datasets: Bio-Oracle v3.0 (Assis et al. 2024): Sea surface temperature (thetao), Salinity (so) and ocean pH (ph) decadal projections (2020-2090) at depthmax levels under SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5. Baseline files (thetao: 2000-2019; so: 2000-2019; ph: 2000-2018) covering the WIO ecoregions extent at 0.083° (~9 km) resolution are also included. Copernicus C3S satellite altimetry (doi:10.24381/cds.4c328c78): Monthly mean sea level anomaly (SLA) gridded product covering January 1993 to December 2023, cropped to the WIO extent at 0.25° (~28 km) resolution. Contains modified Copernicus Climate Change Service information (2024). Neither the European Commission nor ECMWF is responsible for any use that may be made of the Copernicus information or data it contains. CHIRPS v2.0 (Funk et al. 2015): Daily precipitation for 1981-2025 and monthly PTOT index covering the extent of the WIO ecoregions.
