NaWO2 crystallizes in the tetragonal I4_1/a space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Na1+ is bonded to six equivalent O2- atoms to form edge-sharing NaO6 octahedra. There are a spread of Na–O bond distances ranging from 2.43–2.52 Å. W3+ is bonded in a distorted square co-planar geometry to four equivalent O2- atoms. There are two shorter (2.03 Å) and two longer (2.14 Å) W–O bond lengths. O2- is bonded to three equivalent Na1+ and two equivalent W3+ atoms to form a mixture of distorted corner and edge-sharing ONa3W2 square pyramids.
