This repository supports the manuscript “Non-uniform pneumatic actuation switches macroscopic properties of elastomeric honeycombs“ by O. Faltus, M. Doškář, J. Havelka, P. Rychnovský, and O. Rokoš, published first as a preprint at https://arxiv.org/, see the actual description of the Zenodo entry for the latest reference. This repository contains: Videos of experiments on honeycomb silicone samples loaded by pneumatic pressure in different actuation schemes. Raw experimental data from pneumatic loading experiments on silicone rubber samples with a script for visualizing them. Finite element simulation results of both the experimental samples and of RVEs of pneumatically loaded hexagonal-stacked honeycomb microstructures, with a script for visualizing them. Dispersion analysis results for all steps of the abovementioned RVE finite element simulations. The data and scripts are in the MATLAB format, and were created in the R2024b MATLAB version. For the codes to work fully, the `codes_and_data.zip` file and `photos.zip` file have to be unpacked into the same directory. Videos Two post-processed videos can be found in the parent folder, titled `pat1_experiment.mp4` and `pat2_experiment.mp4`. The experiments on large 81-void samples are shown together with the evolution of the average air pressure in the voids during the loading process. Experimental data The experimental datasets can be found in the `data_exp` directory. Four different experimental settings are contained: Small sample of 19 voids, actuated in the row-wise pressurization scheme s2: 13 experiments Small sample of 19 voids, actuated in the constant pressurization scheme s0: 8 experiments Large sample of 81 voids, actuated in the row-wise pressurization scheme s2: 10 experiments Large sample of 81 voids, actuated in the double-row-wise pressurization scheme s3: 17 experiments The raw unprocessed readings of pump speed of the two vacuum pumps used to introduce suction, as well as independent measurements of air pressure for each of the pumps, are contained for each experiment in a `.mat` file. The results can be visualized by running `visualize_experiment.m`. Some of the experiments contain photos of the deformed state of the sample. Low quality photos are embedded directly in the `.mat` file, while certain higher quality photos can be found in the `photos` directory, with the datasets containing the relevant filenames. IMPORTANT: the `photos` directory is included in the form of a ZIP file, which must be unpacked before the visualizer script can access those photos. For some experiments photos might be missing; those are the experiments captured on video instead, where no photos were taken. FEM simulation results Datasets are provided in the `data_fem` directory for six RVE simulations (four different actuation schemes, two of them also rotated by 60 degrees) and four finite sample simulations corresponding to the experimental setups described above. The results can be visualized by running `visualize_fem.m`. This script and the annotations within also serve as a guide to the structure of the finite element data. Dispersion analysis results The results of dispersion analysis of the RVE finite element simulation results for the three main pressurization schemes are contained within the directory `data_dispersion`. They can be visualized using the script `visualize_dispersion.m`. The data structure is annotated within this script.
