This data accompanies the paper "Sources and discharge of nitrogen pollution from agriculture and wastewater in the Mesoamerican Reef region" (Berger et al. 2022). The data displays the modeled amount of N (Nitrogen) generated in each watershed, from four distinct sources: fertilizer use in crop production, run off from livestock production, wastewater generated by tourists (including cruise disembarking tourists), and wastewater generated by residents. The shapefile is structured with each row representing an individual watershed, with attributes that list the kg N from each of the four sources, as well as a column for total kg N generated in that watershed. The raster data displays the extent of N diffusion from each watershed into coastal waters, based on a model to distribute the values into coastal waters based on a cost-path surface until a minimum threshold (0.05% of global maximum) is reached .
