Fill from three privy features and a possible privy/trash feature at the Manteno Townsite,
13SH27, in west-central Iowa was sampled for pollen, parasite, and macrofloral remains. This
townsite is believed to date from the 1850s-1880s. The four features sampled were found in
close proximity to one another but may reflect different use periods, although there may be some
overlap. Pollen and macrofloral analysis of the three privy features will be used to provide
information concerning foods eaten and trash disposed of by the privy users. Parasite analysis
will lend insight into the health of the historic site occupants. These analyses also will be used
to determine if the possible privy/trash pit did function as a privy.
