Sales of video games and gaming consoles in Mexico have sustained year-on-year growth between 2009 and 2020. In the latter, sales within this market amounted to over 32 billion Mexican Pesos in the North American country. This is almost five percent more than the previous year.Gaming is BIGIn 2020, Mexico was the leading video game market in Latin America. With revenues totalling approximately 1.9 billion U.S. dollars, the country managed to overtake the South American giant, Brazil, and almost quadrupled the amount generated by the Argentine market. Almost 73 million out of the 127 million people living in Mexico –therefore more than half of its population– played video games in 2019. Challenging the status-quoWhile the coronavirus outbreak hindered some industries, the gaming market thrived in 2020. Video game expenditure in Brazil, Chile, and Mexico grew by over 50 percent during the pandemic. Amid long-lasting movement restrictions and lockdowns, many people turned to gaming as a form of entertainment. As of June of that year, Latin Americans had recorded the largest increase in time spent in this activity worldwide. In addition, new market opportunities have arisen because of the gaming boom, with eSports viewership in the region projected to grow by about 15 million in two years, reaching as much as 70 million viewers by 2022.
