Mycobacterium tuberculosis biovars tuberculosis and bovis from captive elephant tuberculosis cases

Cases of tuberculosis from two zoo elephants in the United States were initially typed and maintained by the USDA before whole genome sequencing in this work. One case of Mycobacterium tuberculosis biovar tuberculosis and one case of Mycobacterium tuberculosis biovar bovis were Illumina NovaSeq sequenced and de novo assembled by shovill, then corrected and scaffolded using RagTag against Mycobacterium tuberculosis biovar tuberculosis and bovis reference genomes, respectively. These genomes provide insight into tuberculosis circulating within captive elephants in the United States, and identifying and breaking these chains of infection are essential to preserve already endangered species like elephants.
