This survey forms part of a major project carried out in connection with the union referenda in 1992 (Maastricht) and in 1993 (Edinburgh). The main part of the data material, which was collected by the Danish Gallup Institute at the request of an election research group consisting of Jørgen Goul Andersen, Jens Hoff, Hans Jørgen Nielsen, Steen Sauerberg and Torben Worre, is based on daily voting barometers (the so-called CATI-measurements), but the project also includes omnibus surveys carried out as interviews in the home or by means of self-administered questionnaires. The project comprises the following surveys at the DDA: # #DDA-1835: Gallup Interviews Before the Union Referendum 1992. #DDA-1836: Gallup Interviews After the Union Referendum 1992. #DDA-1837: Gallup CATIs Before and After the Union Referendum 1992. #DDA-1838: Gallup CATIs Before and After the Union Referendum 1993. #DDA-1839: Gallup Interviews After the Union Referendum 1993. # #This survey contains data collected by the Danish Gallup Institute as part of omnibus no. 08 in 1992. # #The following background variables are included in the data material: #The respondent's sex, age and marital status; size of the household, number of adults (persons aged 13 or more) and children, and age of the children; the respondent's position in the household; the respondent's education, occupational status, public or private employment and income; gross household income; the housewife's occupational status; housing conditions and ownership of the dwelling as well as geographical location and degree of urbanization. # #In addition to this, the following special questions (dealing with topical events) are included: #Attitude to a number of opinions about the co-operation within the EC (Denmark should withdraw from the EC; the individual member countries should maintain full independence and have the right of veto in connection with EC decisions; the individual member countries should to an increased degree leave the decisions to the EC and submit to the community; the EC should in time develop into the United States of Europe with a joint European government); vote at the EC referendum on 2 June; most important reasons for voting yes and no, respectively; whether the co-operation up till now within the EC can continue; whether Denmark can continue as a member of the EC; whether and for which party the respondent voted at the general election on 12 December, 1990; which party the respondent would vote for at a hypothetical general election on the day after the interview; the respondent's interest in a number of things (clothes fashion; cosmetics; interior design; kitchen design; cars; films on TV; sports on TV; news on TV; entertainment on TV; politics/economy; pollution and environmental questions; consumer questions; tax conditions; health/disease; nourishment (healthy/unhealthy); housing policy); as well as attitude to a number of statements (everythting changes too fast today; people with AIDS should be kept in quarantine; it should be legal to use drugs in moderation; the man should decide in the home; Denmark should withdraw from the EC as soon as possible; the trade unions have too much power; the control with the public sector is too loose; there should be nuclear power stations in Denmark; one should accept a deterioration of the environment if industry grows; it is too easy to get public assistance; it is right for Denmark to be a member of NATO; it should be voluntary to be a member of a trade union; privatization of the public sector improves the efficiency/service; too little is done to protect nature and the environment; disease should be prevented instead of cured; it is nice to buy luxury products; the respondent is willing to spend a little extra for a well-known trade mark; it is good to talk about experiences; most decisions are made together with other people; self-confidence compared with friends; advertisements make people stupid; it is important to keep in a good physical shape; it is enlivening to take a risk; weight problems; it is important to dress nicely; other people often ask the respondent for advice; the importance of trying new products before friends/acquaintances; account purchase; stress in everyday life; make-up is a necessity not a luxury; cleaning has to be done quickly; time for personal hygiene; use of allergy tested products; security is the most important thing in connection with investments; use of low-price goods; advertisements show women in a degrading way; the importance of new equipment in the kitchen; the habits of friends regarding beer and liquor; tries to avoid products with additives; always reads advertisement papers; likes to change between different trade marks; advertisements are for the benefit of the consumers; uses re-cycled paper; always buys environmentally friendly products; mainly goes by the price when shopping; thinks that there is a correlation between price and quality; does not want to receive advertisements; shops more in discount stores now than earlier; can easily do without the daily paper; the local weekly paper is sufficient; gets a lot of good cooking ideas from magazines; likes to read a novel/short story in a magazine; does not mind commercials on TV); voting intention at a hypothetical referendum on Danish entry into the EC and at a hypothetical referendum on Danish withdrawal from the EC; whether the economic or the political co-operation within the EC is most important for Denmark in the long run; attitude to a continued extension of the economic co-operation in an economic union; attitude to a continued extension of the political co-operation in a political union; and the political questions which are most important for Denmark (pollution/the environment, unemployment, the economy/balance of payments, social and welfare problems, the tax burden, housing problems, the health services, security policy, the Single European Market, refugees)
