We conducted a study on the grain size characteristics of sediments from sediment core LV53-23 located in the central Japan Sea, the downwind region of the westerly winds, and reconstructed the evolutionary history and spatial variation patterns of the westerly circulation in the Japan Sea since the Last Glacial Period (~60 ka). The results show that the core sediments are dominated by silt, and most of their grain size frequency distribution curves present unimodal distributions, which are consistent with the grain size characteristics of modern Japanese yellow sand and sediment cores from adjacent regions reported in prior studies, indicating typical aeolian sedimentary features. Analysis of the median grain size of the silt fraction, which serves as the mode grain size group, demonstrates that the median grain size of the silt fraction can act as a proxy indicator for the westerly circulation recorded by the core sediments. At suborbital and millennial scales, the millennial-scale stadial-interstadial cycles of the median grain size of the silt fraction during Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS3) are closely correlated with the westerly circulation. This dataset contains data including variations in the contents of various grain size fractions from 0 to 2 mm with a 0.15 φ interval, as well as median grain size, mean grain size, sediment sorting, skewness, kurtosis, and the contents of sand, silt and clay.
