Gentoo penguins and Adelie penguins breed sympatrically on Ardley Island, west Antarctic Peninsula. In the present study, two ribosomal RNA (i.e., 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA) genes and a cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene from feces of the penguins were sequenced using the Illumina MiSeq platform in order to know whether the two penguin species possess compositional similarity in gut microbiota and diet.
