The essay focuses on the dawn of Salento art history, identifying Cosimo De Giorgi as the pioneer of sector studies, by method and by purpose. De Giorgi, however, anticipating the concept of "cultural heritage" by about a century, indicates the direction that must be followed methodologically for the conservation and protection of works of art, not separated from the maintenance of their memory, which can only be implemented through correct knowledge.
