ZooGeoData: a global census of animal geomorphic agents and their effects

This data set provides a global inventory of reported animal geomorphic agents and their effects, created by systematically reviewing the published research on animal impacts on landforms and landscapes. Full details on the systematic review process and analysis of these data are provided in the accompanying publication Harvey GL, Khan Z, Albertson LK, Coombes M, Johnson MF, Rice SP and Viles HA (2025) Global diversity and energy of animals shaping the Earth's surface, PNAS, 122(8) e2415104122. A meta-analysis of a subset of these data is presented in the accompanying publication Khan Z, Harvey GL, Albertson LK, Fritz SF, Rice SP, Johnson MF, Bull JM and Moore GV, (in press) Signatures of wild animal life in Earth’s landscapes, Journal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface. This record contains: a README file, a full bibliography of papers derived from systematic literature review, species inventory of animal geomorphic agents, species occurrence data (where available) downloaded from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), average body size data and number of species for each genus, code used to download and map species occurrence data and code used to produce biomass and energy calculations. In addition, effect size data and code used for the meta-analysis referenced above are included in this record. All calculations and figures in the accompanying publications (see full references above) are based on data shared here.
