This study explores the role of the rare biosphere in responding to environmental stressors. Sediments from a highly diverse anaerobic spring were incubated with various stressors (several salinity concentrations, as well as several temperatures). Following incubations, the abundant OTUs were examined to determine their origin (whether they belonged to rare or abundant OTUs prior to incubation with the stressor).
