In early 1999 Southern Research completed an archaeological resources reconnaissance
survey of the Fort McAllister State Historic Site for the Georgia Department of
Natural Resources. This examination of approximately 1700 acres, which is located in
rural Bryan County, Georgia on a series of marsh islands in the Ogeechee River delta,
identified seven archaeological sites and one isolated find. One of these sites, 9Bn27
(Fort McAllister), is presently listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP),
although it was not identified as such by its archaeological designation. A portion of Site
9Bn22 is also included within the present NRHP boundary for Fort McAllister. Six other
sites were deemed potentially eligible for listing in the NRHP and additional study is
needed to determine fully their eligibility status. One site and one isolated find were considered
ineligible for inclusion in the NRHP.
