Variations in the abiotic environment could impact plant disease development by affecting both plant hosts and microbial pathogens. However, our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying plant-pathogen interactions under the influence of abiotic stresses such as drought is limited, specifically in perennial woody plants. The aim of this study was to investigate the response of Eucalyptus grandis to combined drought stress and infection by the stem canker-causing fungal pathogen, Chrysoporthe austroafricana, as well as recovery from the combination of these stresses upon rewatering. This enables prediction of tree resilience under a changing climate and contributes to future tree genetic improvement.
