VPRS 11354 Teacher Cards (Non-Government Schools)

This series of cards was maintained by the Registered Schools Board and its predecessors in order to provide summary information on all Non-Government School teachers registered in Victoria. The Registration of Teachers and Schools Act 1905 (No.2013) provided for this registration process.The information contained on the cards includes the name of the teacher, registration number, residential address, qualifications, school level at which teaching (eg. Primary, Junior-Secondary, Secondary, Technical), whether a special subject teacher (eg. Art, Phys.Ed., Music), registration date, additional registration dates, registration category.Some of the cards also include such information as teachers date-of-birth, name changes (by marriage or deed-poll), and an assessment of teachers fitness to teach.The earlier series of cards (boxes 1 - 58, 1906 - 1987) in some instances (about 10% of total) use different coloured cards to indicate which level the teacher taught at. They are : Orange (Division A, Sub-Primary), Green (Division B, Primary), Blue (Division C, Junior-Secondary), Pink (Division D, Secondary), Yellow (Division F, Special Subject). The archivist was unable to find an example of a card registering Division E, but it is presumed that this indicated a teacher in a Technical school. The majority of the cards are coloured white and indicate the teaching level on the card.Whilst the majority of the cards are headed Registered Schools Board, a small percentage of the cards are headed Council of Public Education, which may indicate that the majority of the series was created after 1982.From 1988 - 1990 (boxes 59 - 64), a different white coloured card was uniformly used containing the same information as the earlier cards. This information was typed onto the cards.
