A Tectonic Map of the Caloris Basin, Mercury

Mapping was carried out on the 166 m/pix Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS) monochrome morphology mosaic, supplemented by the high incidence angle mosaics with west and east illumination. Structure mapping was carried out on varying mapping scales to capture both fine and coarse details. Polyline shapefiles were created in ArcGIS 10.8. Vertices were placed at visible endpoints (tips) of structures or wherever changes in orientation were visible in the image data along the length of the structures. Basin Outline: Demarks the boundary separating Caloris interior and exterior geological units. Where clearly discernible, this outline traces the basin rim. In places, the rim was not well defined and, in those instances, areas separating high-standing terrain from low-lying terrain were inferred to outline the basin. Basin Structures: Ridges indicate the crests of, or surface breaks associated with positive-relief landforms that are linked to shortening. Graben mark the surface break of negative-relief landforms that are linked to extension. This map was discussed in: Byrne, P. K., Klimczak, C., and Şengör, A. M.
