A global database of olive oil geographical indications and their properties

Olive oil is a traditional product with nutritional characteristics ideal for supporting a healthy diet. Olive oils are often labelled as geographical indications (GI) and are therefore legally tied to the historical, environmental, and human characteristics of specific production areas. Due to climate change, environmental degradation, and the abandonment of traditional practices, both environmental and social conditions are now changing, and GI products are therefore threatened. However, relevant information to understand the impacts of global changes on olive oil GI has never been summarized in a unique dataset. Here, we present the first global dataset on olive oil GI. We collected spatial, agricultural and quality regulations of almost 200 olive oil GI spanning 12 countries and 4 continents. The analytical regulations include important parameters that determine the quality attributes of olive oils, such as the acidity level, and agronomic specifications, such as cultivated olive varieties. The present dataset can be used by researchers and practitioners to study olive oil producing areas in face of increasing impacts of global changes.
