Smartphones, with their built-in sensors and widespread availability, present a promising platform for acoustic sensing applications across fields such as environmental monitoring, machinery diagnostics, and healthcare. However, the variability in microphone performance across different models raises concerns about the feasibility of developing generalizable, device-agnostic acoustic characterization algorithms. This study investigates whether contemporary smartphone microphones exhibit consistent performance across frequency bands (e.g., within the range critical to human speech and hearing), as this would support the assertion that algorithms trained on one device could reliably classify on others. We conducted controlled experiments on 8 popular smartphone models, analyzing frequency response across frequencies from 200 Hz to 20 kHz.
