The First Part (to Sû. 18) of the large Commentary on the Koran التفسیر الکبیر, properly styled مفاتیح الغیب, by Fakhr al-dîn Abu’l-faḍl Muḥammad b. ‘Omar Râzî (d. A. H. 606), who finished it in A. H. 602. Cf. Ḥ. Kh. vi. 5; Ibn Khallikân, ed. Wüstenfeld, No. ٦١١; and Cat. Bodl. ii. 701.

It begins with a long and detailed explanation of the first Sûrah, which forms a separate book.1 The first words are (fol. 9): الحمدلله الذی وفّقنا لاداء افضل الطاعات، ووقفنا علی کیفیة اکتساب اکمل السعادات، و هدانا الی ان قلنا –followed by الاستعاذة and البسملة , and a paraphrase of Sûrah 1. Then the commentary begins: اما بعد فهذا کتاب مشتمل علی شرح بعض ما رزقنا الله من علوم سورة الفاتحة. It contains a مقدّمة in three فصول, the beginning of the first of which is quoted in Ḥ. Kh., and three books, each subdivided into ابواب and مسائل. They are:

Fol. 10v. فی العلوم المستنبطة من قوله اعوذ بالله;

Fol. 19. فی مباحث بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم; and

Fol. 26. الکلام فی سورة الفاتحة.

The commentary on the following Sûrah (Sû. 2 from fol. 37v. to 177) is also very extensive, consisting rather of separate tracts, which are often subdivided into different مسائل. The whole text of the Kora is inserted in portions.

The present MS. consists of two volumes. The first, which concludes with Sû. 3 (on fol.220), has the following colophon:

تم السفر الاول من التفسیر الکبیر الذی صنّفه الامام العالم البارع الفیلسوف فخر الملة و حبر الامة علّامة (sic) الرازی برد الله مضجعه و شکر سعیه بحمد الله و منه وسعة لطفه و عونه علی ید احقر عباد الله حمزة بن محمد بن المحمود حقّق الله رجاه و من المخاوف نجّاه ظهیرة یوم الاحد التاسع من شهر الله الاصبّ رجب المرجب سنة ثلث و ثلثین بعد الالف من الهجرة النبویة المصطفویة علیه و علی آله الصلوات و الف الف التحیة.

The second volume contains the date of the author, relating to Sû. 18:

تم تفسیر هذه السورة یوم الثلثاء السابع عشر من شهر صفر سنة اثنتین و ستمائة فی بلدة غزنین و نسال اکرم الاکرمین و ارحم الراحمین ان یخصنا بالمغفرة و الفضل فی یوم الدین.

The colophon runs as follows:

تم المجلد الاول من کتاب تفسیر الکبیر امتثالا لامر مخدومنا و مخدوم اهل العالم صاحب الفضل و الکرم جامع المعقول و المنقول حاوی الفروع و الاصول شیخ محمد الشهیر بابن الخاتون العاملی ادام الله ظلال افادته و افاضته علی مفارق الطلاب بحسب الجد و الطاقة علی ید اقل الخلیقة بل لا شی فی الحقیقة محمد امین ابن فضیلت پناه مرحومی مولانا مهدی رستمداری فی یوم الاحد ثالث عشر شهر ذی القعدة الحرام من شهور سنة اثنی (sic) و اربعین بعد الالف من الهجرة النبویة المصطفویة اللهم اغفر کاتبه (sic) و لمن نظر فیه آمین یا رب العالمین.

Beautifully written; the words of the Koran in the Thulth character and in gold, headings in red and blue. The beginning of each volume is splendidly ornamented and gilt; gold lines round the pages.

The whole is preceded by a lengthy Memoir of Râzî, including a list of his works and a survey of the present commentary. It begins: فی بعض فضائل مولانا الامام فخر الملة و الدین الرازی و ذکر مصنّفاته التی شهرت و وصلت هذه البلاد مصدّرة بخطبة بلیغة. Written in a similar style, also with an ornament at the beginning.

In a very elegant native binding, illuminated both outside and inside.
