Giardia lamblia is the most common pathogenic intestinal dwelling parasite of humans worldwide and a frequent cause of endemic and epidemic diarrhea and gastrointestinal disease. Giardia is also considered a potential bioterrorism agent. Understanding the diversity and common coding capacity of Giardia genomes will allow for better drug and vaccine development for this important human pathogen.
