We describe the recent invasion of the retrotransposon Tirant into the Drosophila melanogaster genome. We sequenced various laboratory strains with published collection dates to determine the presence of functional Tirant sequences. We also sequenced small RNAs for selected strains to detect the presence of piRNAs corresponding to Tirant.
