Der Begriff "Erdstall" bedeutet "Stätte unter der Erde" oder "Erd-Stollen" und hat nichts mit einem Viehstall zur separaten Unterbringung der Haustiere zu tun. Die Gänge sind meist winkelig angeordnet, bis zu 60 cm breit und 1,0 bis 1,4 m hoch. Ihre Länge beträgt meist nicht mehr als 50 m. In vielen Erdställen gibt es auch sogenannte Lampennischen sowie zumeist endständige kammerartige Erweiterungen und Sitznischen.

An "Erdstall" is an artificial cave. Numerous such caves have been built in the Middle Ages. The name "Erdstall" is not associated with "Stall" (= "stable"), but points to a spot (= Stelle). All of them have only one entrance and adit and winding tunnels are very narrow. Overall length is rarely more than 50m.
