Gregor Johann Mendel was born in Silesia, Austria-Hungary, and later became an abbot in Brno (present day Czech Republic). Despite his groundbreaking research on heredity, his findings, first presented in 18651, were not appreciated until 35 years later. The 200th anniversary of his birth in 2022 presented the opportunity to highlight his enduring legacy in genetics. On this occasion, Mendel was identified in the Augustinian tomb, and his genome was retrieved, enabling us to open another window at his life and health.
