Clinical infections with Escherichia marmotae have been reported, but the prevalence of E. marmotae in human infections remains largely unknown due to its frequent misidentification as E. coli in standard diagnostic workflows, including MALDI-TOF-MS on the Biomerieux VITEK system. E. marmotae exhibits great genomic diversity and may possess distinct functions and different patterns of virulence than E. coli. Although patients affected by E. marmotae have been treated "as if" infected by E. coli, accurate diagnosis of E. marmotae may lead to changes in treatment.
