The altar U was commanded by Yahaw Chan Ah Baak, who wasn't a ruler of Copan but probably the half-brother of Yax Pac, 16th ruler of Copan. They were found in the present village of Copan Ruinas, but when it was reported, any possible association with ancient Maya buildings had been obliterated by modern construction work and the displacement of the sculpture. Still, it is highly probable that the monument was associated with a building complex at that site since it is much too bulky to have been dragged to the village from far away.
