Core histones are typically transcriptional regulated for their synthesis to coincide with DNA replication. We found that in H. uvarum core histone cis-regulation was rewired to be transcriptionally controlled by the transcription factor Mcm1. We tested for functional divergence of H. uvarum's Mcm1 by replacement of S. cerevisiae's Mcm1 and assessing the transcriptomic effects.
