Our study proceeded in two adjacent mountain stands (beech and spruce) undergoing recovery from acid deposition and differing in nitrate losses. We hypothesized that the soil microbial community's structural and functional characteristics in both forest types are coupled with their different soil nitrogen transformations. Based on microbial activity measurements and 16S rDNA barcoded sequencing, we found the microbial communities of the beech and spruce stands and their metabolic abilities were distinct and the composition and functioning of microbial communities reflected differences in transformations of carbon and nitrogen.
