Methylobacterium extorquens CP3 (proposed name) is a seed endophyte of Crotalaria pumila (low rattlebox) growing at a metal mining site in Zimapán, Mexico. This bacterium is the most dominant member of the C. pumila seed microbiome and is successfully transmitted to next generations. The seed endophyte colonizes the xylem of C. pumila, as confirmed with fluorescence microscopy, suggesting a systemic endophytic lifestyle. M. extorquens CP3 furthermore stimulates plant growth and is resistant to zinc and cadmium, which makes it a promising candidate for seed endophyte-enhanced phytoremediation of metal-contaminated sites.
